First Settlers from Indiana
All are Decedents of George Mount from New Jersey
Fayette County
Hezekiah Mount
was born on 5 Jul 1788 in Windsor, Middlesex Co., NJ. He died on 25 Sep
1866 in Connersville, Fayette County, IN. He was buried in Connersville
City Cemetery, Connersville, Fayette Co., IN. Son of William and Rebecca
(Cox) Mount in MOUNT OF NEW AMSTERDAM SECTION. He moved from New Jersey
to New York, with his older brother, David, about 1800 and in 1808 moved
to Ohio. In 1810, they moved to Franklin County, Indiana. In 1812,
Hezekiah moved to Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana, where he
received a land grant, signed by President Madison, for several hundred
acres of land. Hezekiah Mount served as a Capt. of Light House in the
war of 1812. Dr. John Stillwell in his genealogical work on the early
settlers of New York and New Jersey states that Hezekiah Mount, son of
William and Rebecca (Cox) Mount married Catherine Mount, daughter of
Hugh Taylor Mount. This is an error as the family Bible as well as
records of Fayette County, Indiana indicate that Hezekiah Mount married
(1) about 1809, Deborah Chamberlain, born Aug 30, 1791 and after her
death (2) about 1820, Elizabeth Chamberlain, sister of Deborah, born Aug
31, 1798 and died Apr 17, 1863. She is buried next to her husband. Both
were daughters of Enoch and Rachel Chamberlain as evidenced by the
following letter which in 1928 was in the possession of Mr. Oscar
Mitchner of Fayette County, Indiana.
Franklin County
David Mount
was born on 2 Feb 1778 in Windsor, NJ. He died on 16 May 1850 in
Brookfield, Franklin County, IN. David married Rhoda Hunt in NJ. Son of
William and Rebecca (Cox) Mount. He was a political figure in the early
Indiana frontier where he held several elected offices. David built a
large block-house on the shores of the White Water River, near Metamore,
which was referred to as Mount's Fort. He was elected to the Indiana
General Assembly, Associate Judge of the Circuit Court, and was a State
Senator. His death was caused by a blow from a
vicious horse. They were members of the Presbyterian Church. David and
his brother, Hezekiah, came to Franklin County about 1818 from New York
by way of Ohio, where they lived for a while.
Pike County William MOUNT William married (1) Nancy Johnson . William married (2) Elizabeth Murrie in 1856.
