First Settlers from Maryland
Cumberland County JOSEPH and
CATHERINE MOUNTS, according to family tradition came to America with
+our- children about 1730 and settled in and around Cumberland,
Maryland. The father, Joseph Mounts, Sr., died before 1754 in Orange
Co., Virginia. They lived in the section that later became Fredrick Co.,
Maryland. Joseph
Mounts, Sr. received a land patent, Oct 3, 1734 in Orange Co.
Virginia. Providence Mounts leased this land in 1764 to Thomas
Swearingen.

Richard Mount received transportation from England to the Providence of
Maryland in 1664; (Maryland Hall of Records Liber 8, Folio 486). Wife's name unknown at this time. Family
records indicate that he was probably from Wells. Members of this family spell their last name as Mount and Mounts, even those
of the same sibling group. Therefore, care must be taken to determine which Mount/Mounce/Mounts group to
which they really belong. Some have thought that Joseph Mount, son of Humphrey Mount of Middlesex
County, New Jersey might be the founder of this group. since he is not found in New Jersey after the
1734 Militia rolls were taken. In addition, other members of the Mount family who were nephews of this
Joseph Mount, moved to Virginia in the 1720-30 period. There are several by the name of Joseph Mount
in the era during these early years. Humphrey and Prudence Mount of New Jersey moved to Harrison
County, West Virginia prior to 1800 as did his cousin, Thomas and Mary (Clayton) Mount. However,
with all of this evidence, no connection between the New Jersey family and that of the Welshman, Joseph
Mounts has been found.
